Classes, Camps, and Workshops
Spring 2009 classes and camps go on sale at 9:30 a.m. on January 3rd.
The goal of the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science educational programming is to provide students with an opportunity beyond the traditional classroom. Our classes have been designed around 21st Century Skills, with the outcome being intrinsically motivated students who will want to learn beyond our time together. 21st Century skills are the skills students need to succeed in work, school and life. They include, but are not limited to: global awareness, critical thinking and problem solving skills, communication skills, creativity and innovation, collaboration skill, social responsibility and self-direction.
The Toddler Art Series: (2-4 yrs w/adult) The Toddler Art Series has been developed for parents and toddlers to explore the fundamentals of art together. Guided by an art professional, toddlers will be introduced to textures, shapes, and colors while making original art. Sign-up for one class or all three for a portfolio of artwork. $30.00, $27.00 for members (per 3 week class) I . Students will be introduced to basic art concepts dealing with line, texture and color. Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 7, 10:30-11:15 a.m. or Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 7, 12:00-12:45 p.m. II. Students will continue to explore basic art concepts while building their art vocabulary. Mar. 21, 28, Apr. 4, 10:30-11:15 a.m. or Mar. 21, 28, Apr. 4, 12:00-12:45 p.m. III. Students will complete their first art portfolio which will showcase their art skills. Apr. 18, 25, May 2, 10:30-11:15 a.m. or Apr. 18, 25, May 2, 12:00-12:45 p.m. Famous Artist Series: (5-6 yrs) Introduce your child to the great artists!
$45, $40 for members (per 3 week class) Leonardo’s World of Art: Students will be introduced to Leonardo Da Vinci’s master works and will experiment with his drawing and painting techniques under the guidance of an art professional.
Mar. 21, 28, Apr. 4, 10:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Van Gogh’s World of Art: Students will be introduced to Vincent Van Gogh’s master works and will experiment with his post-impressionist techniques under the guidance of an art professional. Apr. 18, 25, May 2, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Creative Play Series: By experimenting with common parts and pieces, students will have structured creative play time focused on developing their problem solving skills.
$50, $45 for members (per 3 week class) K’NEX Creatures (5-6 yrs): No child can resist K’NEX! This class offers structured play which will enable your child to develop motor skills, problem solving skills and teamwork skills while creating a variety of creatures.
Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 7, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Kid K’NEX Big Buildings (5-6 yrs): No child can resist K’NEX! This class offers structured play which will enable your child to develop motor skills, problem solving skills and teamwork skills while creating a variety of structures. Mar. 21, 28, Apr. 4, 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Design It! Buildings and Bridges (7-9 yrs): Using common materials and uncommon strategies, students will be challenged to construct buildings and bridges to fit a variety of circumstances. During this structured play, your students will develop problems solving skills while utilizing their creativity. Apr. 18, 25, May 2 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. After School Series (10-14 yrs): Our after school series has been designed for students looking for that in-depth art experience. We have professional instructors that will introduce and inspire students to tap into their creativity.
$75, $68 for members (per 5 week class) Cartooning: Explore the world of cartooning! Learn the techniques to create your own character in a variety of cartooning styles. At the end of the 5 week session students will have created a portfolio to be proud of.
Feb. 19, 26, Mar. 5, 12, 19, 4:00 –5:30 p.m. Acting I & II: These classes will focus on building performance skills and actor confidence. Each session will explore basic acting technique, improvisation, and character study. Each series will culminate in a student theatre performance. Acting I works as a prerequisite to Acting II. Acting I: Feb. 17, 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17, 4:00 –5:30 p.m.
Acting II: Mar. 24, 31, Apr. 7, 14, 21, 4:00 –5:30 p.m.
Photography: World class photographer Rod Evans will guide students through the composition and framing techniques. Students will need to have access to a digital camera. At the end of the 5 week session there will be an exhibit with an artists’ reception. Mar. 26, Apr. 2, 9, 16, 23, 4:00 –5:30 p.m. Acting Series: Get a head start on developing those 21st century skills! Research has shown that exposure to acting/theatre improves student’s problem solving abilities.
$45, $40 for members (per 3 week class) Acting Animals (5-6 yrs): Learn the basics of movement, rhythm, shapes, and storytelling in creative group setting. Focus on self-expression and develop teamwork skills through sharing and creating stories about animals. Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 7, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Fairy Tale Fun (5-6 yrs): Students in Fairy Tale Fun will explore acting, story-telling and music through familiar tales. Guided by a trained actor, students will learn to use their imaginations to create characters and teamwork to bring the stories to life. Apr. 18, 25, May 2, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Play Acting II (7-9 yrs): Learn the basics of theatre by experiencing classic and current children’s stories. This group will recreate new characters and settings each week through imaginative play and storytelling. An extension of Play Acting I, newcomers are welcome! Mar. 21, 28, Apr. 4 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Adult Series: (16 yrs and older) Spend time with an art educator learning new techniques or perfecting your craft.
$100, $90 for members (per 5 week class) Sketching: This is a great class for beginners! An art educator will guide you through the techniques of sketching. Students will be exposed to a variety of artists, including the exhibits in the Visual Arts Center.
Feb. 1, 8, 22, Mar. 1, 8, 2:00 –4:00 p.m. Hand Building: Our own clay expert will take you step by step through the hand building process. At the end of these sessions, you will have original clay pieces to give as gifts or to display in your home. Mar. 22, 29, Apr. 5, 19, 26 2:00 –4:00 p.m. COOKING CLASSES Great recipes and great fun! Choose from a variety of classes such as “Cooking for Two”, “Delicious Desserts”, or “Holiday Hors D’oeuvres”. Get a group of friends or coworkers together and pump up your skills in the kitchen with helpful tips and inside secrets. A typical class runs from two to three hours and is perfect for up to 10 guests. Contact Leonardo’s Café at (605) 731-2384 to discuss class options.
