Internships at the Washington Pavilion

The Washington Pavilion has opportunities for various college internships. These positions are not paid positions, but they are excellent opportunities for obtaining experience in a variety of areas.

Arts Night/Exhibition Internship (Spring 2010) FILLED  The Visual Arts Center is seeking a motivated, creative, and organized intern to assist with two major aspects: 1. Arts Night (annual fundraiser that includes an exhibition and live auction)  2. Exhibition preparation including marketing, community relations, and publications. As an intern, this individual will be part of the Visual Arts Center team and will be a key component of Arts Night and the exhibitions that fall in the Spring of 2010. 

Brand Management Internship (Summer 2010) FILLED  The Marketing department at the Washington Pavilion creates and executes the strategy, language, and design of marketing collateral to help generate ticket sales and create awareness of programming and events at the Washington Pavilion. Our brand management intern will assist in the launch of the Pavilion’s new marketing campaign in the summer of 2010 as well as the promotion of the Pavilion’s performance series. The intern will learn about the most effective ways to message events across disciplines and to diverse targeted audiences through the creation of newspaper and magazine ads, facebook and twitter, brochure and direct mail materials, Web and e-mail content, and commercials for radio and television. Additionally, the Brand Management Intern will conduct research on artists and performances, assist in planning promotional events, contribute to broadcast scheduling and production, and assist with communication with the Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Science, Development, Events, and Education departments at the Washington Pavilion.

Educational Programming Internship (Summer 2010)  Educational Programming Internships are designed to expose students to the multi-faceted and exciting field of museum and performing arts informal education while providing students with opportunities to apply classroom skills in a real-world environment. Working closely with the Community Learning Center staff, interns help oversee the operations and classrooms of Washington Pavilion’s summer camps and classes. Over the summer, the Washington Pavilion provides quality educational experiences to over 1,000 children through over 70 different camps and classes. Interns play an integral role in ensuring the quality and success of the program by supervising the classrooms, organizing and overseeing supplies and materials, and assisting camp instructors with art projects and lessons. 

         Responsibilities Include:
         • Hands-on classroom instruction 
         • Overseeing camp registration
         • Preparing supplies and materials for classes 
         • Interacting with visitors, campers, and parents through educational activities
         • Providing excellent customer service for parents & children enrolled in classes
         • Assisting instructors with preparation and execution of projects and art activities 

         Experience in the following areas is preferred:
         • Experience supervising children 
         • Teaching experience
         • Public speaking 
         • Informal education, arts or science education, museum education
         • Customer Service 

Events Planning Internship (Summer 2010)  FILLED Events Planning Internships offer an experience which entails a variety of responsibilities. These responsibilities include supporting all facets of planning events such as parties, ceremonies, weddings, business meetings or conventions for outside clients and the Washington Pavilion’s Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Science, Development, Marketing, and Education departments. The experience that you’ll gain from an Event Planning Internship can be as varied as the events themselves.
           Interns in this area will need to be flexible, energetic, and resourceful with an ability to multi-task. Their primary responsibilities will be to assist the events staff with client communication and management, database management, responding to requests for information, event planning, and hands-on assistance with the set-up and implementation of events. 
           Candidates should demonstrate interest in event management, be confident in a public leadership role, detail-oriented, organized, effective time managers, and self-motivated. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are a must. They must be able to tackle projects both independently and collaboratively, and lift up to 50 pounds. Experience in retail customer service and accounting is preferred. Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, and Internet research are required.

Graphic and Web Design Internship (Summer 2010) FILLED  The Graphic and Web Design Intern works closely with the Marketing Director and Graphic Designer to design and produce printed, electronic, and web-based materials to promote The Washington Pavilion’s performances and events, maintaining a high-quality aesthetic in all materials. Grphic and Web Design Intern will help with the launch of the Washington Pavilion’s new website in the summer of 2010. The successful candidate will enhance their web and graphic design skills, broaden their portfolio, and learn important time management and marketing skills.

Candidates should be well versed in Indesign and Photoshop; experience with HTML coding is a plus. Applicants must be detail-oriented, organized, effective time managers, and possess marketing instincts. Excellent design and interpersonal skills are a must. 

KSDC Program Planning Internship (Spring or Summer 2010)  FILLED The Kirby Science Discovery Center (KSDC) presents a variety of programs throughout the year to engage its visitors. Program Planning Interns will assist the KSDC in developing, planning, budgeting, marketing and executing the Summer of Scientists, a new and exciting 12 week summer program. Interns will join the Pavilion’s science team to create memorable hands-on learning experiences for KSDC visitors and members! 

Non-profit Development Internship (Summer 2010) FILLED The Pavilion's development efforts are expanding, presenting opportunities for a qualified student to apply and grow creative problem solving skills.  While fundmentally working with the Grants Coorindator of the Development Office, the internship will afford the student the porspect of working with other members of the development team as well as staff throughout the entire organization.  Students interested in a career in nonprofit fundraising and/or nonprofit management are encouraged to apply.  The position presents the rare flexibility of creating a mutually beneficial job decription depending on the intern's specific interests and goals.  All interested students are encouraged to apply, though preference may be given to qualified grad students.

Potential projects include, but may not be limited to:
  * developing a tool to track and plan for future grant opportunities
  *developing case statements; academic research to support claims/arguments
  *researching foundations and new funding opportunities
  *creating a resource guide
  *expanding the grant directory
  *researching statistical information to be used in future grants
  *conducting interviews and having regular interaction with program specialists from the The Science Center, 
   Visual Arts Center, and The Performing Arts Center

Sidewalk Arts Festival Internship (Spring or Summer 2010) FILLED Held in early September, the Sidewalk Arts Festival is the largest one-day outdoor arts festival in the state. Interns assist the volunteer planning committee with planning and implementing many of the logistical components of the event. Spend a summer internship helping to organize an annual event that attracts over 50,000 people and benefits the Washington Pavilion's Visual Art Center!
